Curran Drainage Services van

Older town centre, newer estates

Queensferry is really two towns from a drainage point of view. Along the High Street and the streets climbing up from the shore, many buildings are old, stone built and closely packed, with drains that have been altered, extended and connected into each other over a long time. Runs can pass under neighbouring property, chambers are sometimes hard to find, and the original clay pipe is prone to open joints.

Up the hill, the estates built in the late twentieth century and more recently have plastic pipe laid to a modern layout. Those drains are rarely broken. When they block, it is nearly always something that has gone down them: wipes, fat from the kitchen or debris from building work.

Unblocking

We start by lifting the chambers to find which length is blocked, then clear it with rods or water jetting, depending on the cause. On the older properties we take care with fragile clay pipe, matching the pressure and nozzle to the material. Once the drain is running we flush it through and check the flow at each chamber.

Camera surveys, including for buyers

If a drain keeps blocking, or you just want to know what condition it is in, a CCTV drain survey records the inside of the pipe and gives you footage and a written report. Buying an older property near the shore? Drainage is rarely covered properly by a standard home report, so a homebuyer drain survey before you commit can save an unwelcome surprise.

Repairs

Where the survey finds a crack, an open joint or a broken section, we explain the options. A patch can often seal a defect from inside without lifting anything; a collapsed length has to be dug out and replaced. Either way, the work is done by us. See drain repairs for more on the methods.

Signs worth acting on

Most drain problems give some warning. A toilet that needs two flushes, a sink that empties slowly, a gurgle from the bath, or a smell by a gully in the yard all suggest the pipe is narrowing. Water sitting in an inspection chamber when you lift the lid means it has blocked further down. Dealing with it at that stage is easier than waiting until water comes back into the house.

In the older buildings near the shore, damp patches on a lower wall or in a cellar can also be linked to a leaking drain joint, which a survey can confirm.

Getting to South Queensferry

From Pumpherston we head north towards the Forth, so Queensferry is within our regular working area alongside Edinburgh and West Lothian. Parking on the narrow streets near the High Street can be tight, so let us know if there is anywhere close we can leave the van. To book, ring, WhatsApp, or use our contact page.

Before you ring about a South Queensferry drain

A little detective work before the visit makes the job quicker. Walk round the outside and lift any light inspection covers you can manage safely: if the chamber nearest the house is full but the next one down the run is empty, the stoppage sits between the two. If every chamber is dry, the problem is more likely inside, in a trap, a waste pipe or the soil stack. On a sloping street, note whether the neighbour below has water standing in a shared chamber, because that tells us whether the fault is on your branch or further along the joint run.

It also helps to tell us when the trouble began. A drain that slowed gradually over months usually points to scale, roots or a sagging section, while one that stopped suddenly after a heavy downpour or a building job often hides debris or a displaced joint. Old survey reports, house purchase paperwork or photos of the covers are all worth having ready on the phone.

Questions

My house near the High Street shares a drain with the building next door. Can you still help?

Yes. We trace the run to find where the blockage or defect is, and the footage shows whose section it sits in.

Can you find a manhole that has been covered over?

Often. We work from the chambers we can find, and the camera helps us trace the route of the drain from there.

Is a drain survey worth it on a newer Queensferry house?

It is less likely to find damage than on an older property, but it can still show building debris, poor connections or a dip in the pipe.

Do you work in Dalmeny and Kirkliston too?

Kirkliston has its own page. For anywhere else nearby, ring with your postcode and we will confirm.
