How we decide on the repair

Every repair starts with a CCTV drain survey. The camera shows whether the pipe is cracked, collapsed, has displaced or open joints, or has roots growing through it, and it records the exact location and depth of the defect. You get the footage and a written report, so you can see the problem for yourself before any work is agreed.

Where the pipe is still in reasonable shape, a no-dig patch repair or relining restores it from the inside with minimal disruption. Where a section has fully collapsed, excavation and pipe replacement is the lasting fix, and we tell you that plainly.

Domestic and commercial repairs

We repair drains for homeowners, landlords, homebuyers acting on a survey, and commercial premises. Gullies, manholes and chambers are repaired as well as the pipework itself. We are Street Works (NRSWA) and Confined Spaces trained, carry £5 million public liability insurance, and there is no call-out charge.

Where we carry out drain repairs

We work out of Pumpherston, beside Livingston, and repair drains across West Lothian, Edinburgh, Falkirk, Fife and Lanarkshire, including Motherwell, Wishaw and Airdrie. Every repair starts with a CCTV survey so we fix the actual defect, and where the pipe allows we use no-dig patch repairs instead of excavation.

See our Motherwell drainage page for surveys, clearances and repair options in the town.

Patch repair or dig: how the choice is made

A patch repair suits a pipe that is still in shape but has a local fault: a crack, a joint that has opened, or a hole where roots got in. The section is cleaned, then a resin-soaked sleeve is pushed into place and pressed against the pipe wall, where it sets. Nothing is dug up. See no-dig drain repairs for how it works.

Excavation is needed when the pipe has broken, collapsed or dropped so far that a sleeve cannot sit properly. The ground is opened over the defect, the damaged length replaced, and the surface reinstated. Our collapsed drain repair page explains what to expect. In both cases the camera footage decides it, and we show it to you first.

Root removal from drains

Tree roots are a common cause of drain damage. Fine roots find a weak joint, then thicken and spread until they catch everything flowing past. We cut and wash them out, then look again with the camera to see whether the joint needs sealing. Clearing alone is a short-term fix if the way in is still open.

Drain repair questions

What is drain repair?

Drain repair is fixing a damaged section of underground pipe, such as a crack, an open joint, root damage or a collapse, so it carries waste away properly again.

How do you fix a broken drain?

First the pipe is filmed to find the break. Small defects can be sealed from inside with a patch repair; a collapsed or badly displaced section is dug out and replaced.

How do you clear tree roots from a drain?

Roots inside the pipe are cut and washed out with high pressure jetting and cutting tools. That clears the drain, but roots can grow back through the same joint unless it is sealed.

How do you stop tree roots coming back into pipes?

Seal the joint they came through. Once the roots are cut out, a patch repair over the joint usually stops them returning. Our guide on tree roots in drains has more.

Can you repair a damaged manhole or inspection chamber?

Tell us what you can see, such as a broken cover, cracked benching or a chamber that keeps blocking, and we will look at it and explain the repair before any work starts.
