What to try first

Stop flushing. Each flush adds more water to a pan that cannot empty, and that is how bathrooms flood. If the water is high, wait a few minutes to see whether it slowly drops.

What not to pour down

Avoid caustic drain cleaners and bleach mixtures. They rarely shift a solid blockage, they can damage older pipes and seals, and they make the water in the pan hazardous for whoever has to clear it. Boiling water can crack a ceramic pan. Wire coat hangers scratch the glaze and can push the blockage further in.

Toilet, soil stack or the drain outside?

Which part is blocked tells you a lot about the cause:

• Only the toilet is slow, sinks and shower are fine: the blockage is probably in the pan or the short pipe behind it.
• Toilet and the bath or shower on the same floor are both slow: it may be in the soil stack, the vertical pipe that takes waste down the house.

How we clear it

We start at the toilet, using toilet augers and specialist tools that clear the trap without damaging the pan. If the problem is further down, we work through the soil stack or from the outside chamber with rods or water jetting. Flats and shared stacks

In flats, several homes often share one soil stack. A blockage low down can push water up into the lowest flat even though the people above caused it. Stopping it happening again

Most toilet blockages come from what goes into the pan. Only toilet paper should be flushed. Wipes, including those labelled flushable, cotton buds, sanitary products and kitchen roll do not break down in time and catch in the trap or further down the pipe. Children's toys and toilet blocks that slip out of their holders are also regular finds.

If the toilet blocks again within weeks of being cleared, the cause may be the pipe rather than the use: a dip in the drain, a displaced joint or roots further along. A camera check of the run behind the toilet shows which, and saves paying to clear the same blockage twice.

Keeping it clear after the visit

Once the pan flushes properly, small habits keep it that way. Only paper goes down, so keep a lidded bin beside the toilet for wipes, cotton buds and sanitary items, including wipes sold as flushable. If young children are around, a lid lock stops toys disappearing.
