What scale does to a pipe
Inside an old cast iron pipe, rust and mineral deposits form a rough, hard crust. The bore shrinks, the surface catches paper and waste, and blockages become a regular event. Rodding punches a hole through the middle and jetting washes the soft material, but neither shifts the hard scale itself — the pipe blocks again within weeks or months.
The giveaway is a cast iron drain or stack with a history of repeat blockages where no roots, collapse or displacement shows up to explain them.
How descaling works
Descaling uses rotating cutting heads — chains or carbide cutters on a flexible shaft — fed along the pipe. The cutters spin against the pipe wall and grind the scale away, and the debris is flushed out as the work proceeds. It is done steadily, a section at a time, because old cast iron can be thin in places and the point is to clean the pipe, not batter it.
A camera goes down before and after. The first pass confirms the pipe is scaled rather than cracked or collapsed, and the second shows the result and checks the pipe is still sound.
Descaling, relining or replacing?
Descaling makes sense when the pipe is structurally sound but narrowed by deposits. If the camera shows the pipe is also cracked, holed or leaking at the joints, cleaning it back is only the first step — a no-dig repair or reline can then seal it from the inside, and descaling first gives the liner a clean surface to bond to. Where the pipe is too far gone, replacement of the section is the honest answer, and for stacks that is covered on soil pipe repair and replacement.
Cast iron stacks
Vertical cast iron soil stacks scale up just like buried drains, and the symptoms are similar: repeat blockages, slow drainage from upstairs fittings and smells. Descaling a stack is done from an access point or from the top, working down in sections. Because stacks serve every fitting connected to them, the work is planned so bathrooms are out of use for as short a time as possible.

Questions
Is descaling better than jetting for an old cast iron pipe?
They do different jobs. Jetting washes out soft deposits; descaling grinds off the hard rust and scale that jetting cannot shift. A scaled pipe usually needs descaling first, then jetting to flush the debris.
Will descaling damage an old pipe?
Done properly, no — the cutters are worked steadily and the pipe is camera-checked first. If the camera shows the pipe is too thin or cracked, we will say so and discuss repair options instead.
