Blocked Bath or Shower Drain: Causes and Fixes

A bath that empties slowly and a shower that leaves a puddle are often grouped together as blocked drains. Before using any cleaner, work out whether the restriction is at the plughole, along the bathroom waste or farther down the main drain. Each needs a different response, and the pattern of other fixtures gives you the best clue.

Check the opening without forcing anything

Start with the visible waste. Lift out a removable hair catcher and clear what you can reach while wearing gloves. Hair and soap bind together around the cover and stop water leaving the tray or bath even when the pipe beyond it is sound. Run a little water afterwards rather than filling the bath again: you are testing whether this small obstruction was the whole problem.

If the cover does not lift easily, do not force it or break a seal. A shower tray or bath can be hard to reach from beneath, and a disturbed fitting can turn a slow drain into a leak. Note whether the water drains slowly every time or only when another bathroom fixture is used.

One slow fixture, or the whole bathroom?

If the bath alone is slow and the basin, shower and toilet work normally, start with the bath waste. If the bath and shower both back up, they may share a restricted branch before the soil stack. If flushing the toilet pushes water up through the shower, stop flushing: the obstruction may be farther along the shared drain.

Listen for gurgling and check whether the outside gully or inspection chamber is running. You do not need to reach into a chamber. In a flat or other shared building, neighbours may also be affected. Explain that when you ring, because treating one waste pipe cannot clear a blocked communal run.

Why it slows down

Hair mixed with soap is an obvious culprit close to a shower or bath. Farther along, a shared bathroom waste can collect residue where the pipe bends or loses fall. Outside the building, root ingress, a displaced joint or a pipe holding standing water can cause several fixtures to drain slowly together. That is why the location matters more than the smell or the appearance of the surface water.

Our drainage pages list blocked baths and showers among the work we clear. They also explain that a recurring blockage may need a CCTV survey rather than another round of rodding. Footage shows whether the restriction is material that can be cleared or a defect that needs a repair.

What not to put down the plughole

Avoid pouring caustic products into standing water. The chemical can remain there when somebody opens the waste, and it cannot repair a damaged underground pipe. Boiling water is also a poor idea for plastic waste fittings. Remove visible material, test gently and stop if the level begins to rise rather than repeatedly filling a tray with more water.

Do not push drain rods into a bathroom waste without knowing the route. A bath trap or shower connection is not the same as an open straight underground drain. If you cannot clear the material within reach and other fixtures are affected, the problem has moved beyond a simple plughole clean.

When to ask for help

Ring when the toilet causes the shower to back up, more than one fixture drains slowly, wastewater is entering a room or the blockage returns after clearing. Curran lists baths, showers, toilets, sinks and external drains under its unblocking service. Rods and high-pressure jetting are used as appropriate; the aim is to leave the run flowing freely, not simply make the water level drop for a few minutes.

For a repeated problem, the CCTV service supplies footage and a written report with recommendations. That helps you decide whether the pipe needs cleaning again, a no-dig patch where suitable, or another form of repair. We answer 24/7 with no call-out charge across the stated West Lothian and Central Scotland service area. Describe which fixtures are affected when you call 07427 195142.

Questions we get asked

Why does my shower fill when the toilet flushes?

Both may connect to a restricted shared soil pipe or underground drain. Stop flushing if water is rising and have the run checked.

Will a drain cleaner fix a blocked shower?

Removing hair you can reach may help. Caustic cleaner in standing water is hazardous and will not repair a damaged pipe.

Should I request a CCTV survey immediately?

Not for every slow plughole. It becomes useful when several fixtures are affected or the blockage keeps coming back.
