First, stop the water
Do not flush again to test it. Each flush adds water to a bowl that cannot empty. If the bowl is close to overflowing, lift the cistern lid and push the flapper or valve down, or turn off the isolating valve on the supply pipe if there is one. Ask everyone in the house to stop using water until you know where the blockage is.
Check what else is affected
- Only the toilet is slow: the blockage is likely in the toilet trap or pan connector.
- Toilet and nearby basin or bath gurgling: it may be in the soil pipe or stack.
- Downstairs fixtures backing up when upstairs ones are used: the shared drain is blocked.
- Outside chamber full of water: the underground drain is blocked downstream.
- Neighbours affected too: it may be a shared drain or public sewer.
Using a plunger properly
Many plunging attempts fail because of technique rather than the blockage. Use a flanged toilet plunger, which seals into the outlet, rather than a flat sink plunger. Make sure there is enough water in the bowl to cover the cup, press down gently to push out the air, then work it firmly up and down several times before lifting away.
If a few rounds of proper plunging make no difference, stop. Forcing it harder risks splashing foul water and can wedge a solid object further in.
What not to try
- Chemical drain cleaners: they rarely clear a toilet blockage and leave hazardous water behind.
- Wire coat hangers: they can scratch the pan and push the blockage deeper.
- Boiling water: it can crack a ceramic toilet pan.
- Repeated flushing: it risks an overflow of foul water across the floor.
When it is an emergency
It becomes urgent when the only toilet in the house is out of action, when sewage is coming back up through a shower or bath, when an outside chamber is overflowing, or when a business cannot use its toilets. Those are situations where clearing the drain quickly matters more than trying another tool.
The most common causes we find are wet wipes, sanitary products, excess toilet paper and children's toys, but tree roots, scale and damaged pipes also cause toilets to block repeatedly. If it keeps happening, a camera inspection shows why.

Questions we get asked
Why is my toilet blocked when nothing unusual was flushed?
Build-up in the pipe, roots or a damaged section can catch normal waste. If it keeps happening, a camera survey finds the cause.
Can I use a toilet auger myself?
A toilet auger can clear blockages in the pan or trap if used carefully. It will not reach a blockage in the underground drain.
Is a blocked toilet with sewage in the shower an emergency?
Yes. It means the shared drain is blocked. Stop using water and call for drain unblocking.
Do you charge a call-out fee for toilet unblocking?
No. There is no call-out charge, day or night.
